CAUSE / EFFECT
I went to the AIGA New York’s event on December 15. The event was called “Cause / Effect: Design as Change Agent.” There was a lot of work presented that wasn’t particularly inspiring, or didn’t break out of the mold in any way that astounded me. I found this mildly encouraging. It means that there is a place for different approaches to design as activism — that there is a need for fresh perspectives.
There were also a few projects that were throughly, utterly and completely inspiring. Bobby Martin talked about his thesis project at SVA. It was brilliantly community-based, and became a deep collaboration that allowed the project to grow in ways that neither Bobby nor The Abyssinian Baptist Church (the organization with which he worked) could have independantly achieved.
